The Big Premiere

On October 30th, I will have the pleasure of attending a movie premiere in Royal Oak at the Emagine Theater. So what, right? I’ll tell you so what. I’ve been to movie premieres before. Sometimes, they’re bad movies and other times, they’re good, but the one thing that they all have in common is that it is a good time to be had by all. However, that isn’t the big deal. The big deal for this particular movie premiere is that I wrote the screenplay.

The film is Cut/Print and it is a horror story. I wrote it years ago while in a dark place in time and it was the birth of a deep cynicism that I have fought since. It’s the story of two film makers who are tired of bottom feeding, getting taken advantage of, and clawing for every bit of notoriety as serious film makers. They have felt that they’ve paid their dues and are now ready to take on the world in ways few could ever dream. So, they devise a plan to make a documentary about a serial killer, but not just any serial killer. No, their plan is to create a film about an active serial killer, using real footage of his murders. It’s a knee-jerk reaction to a difficult situation that eventual puts them on the receiving end of some maniac’s own aspirations for fame.

The premiere is the beginning of a sweet victory. Cut/Print took a long and winding road to get where it is now. Vince Orlando, who produced and starred in the film, navigated the final cut through some treacherous waters that was teeming with sharks and spotted with jagged rocks. A couple of times, he was bitten. There was blood in the water and a feeding frenzy ensued, but Vince managed to get back on the boat as captain and continue navigating. Eventually, he found calm seas in New World Distribution. The premiere is October 30th, but the film is getting a worldwide release the following week on over one thousand screens. That’s a big deal for a little film. Vince has proved that he is a skilled producer who doesn’t take no for an answer.

So, I will be attending the premiere of the first theatrically released film that I wrote and I couldn’t be happier. Well, I guess I could be happier. I might be overstating it a bit. The point is, a milestone has been reached. Tickets are still available if you’re in the Detroit area on the 30th. You can order them by visiting TicketWeb. Parts of the proceeds go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. There is an after-party with entertainment from rap artist Trick Trick and other special guests.

WARNING: Cut/Print is a horror film. It deals with dark material that some may find offensive. It is extremely violent and anyone who is prone to nightmares, anxiety, disturbing thoughts, or fear should not see this film.
